A Portable Program is a software program which you can install it on any portable device. For eg :- USB Stick and you can carry this stick wherever you go. The main advantage of portable application is that it copies all the system files in the portable device during installation and usage so when you unplug the portable device all your data remain with you.
The Portable Application could be anything like Office utilities, email client, browser etc. I am going to list some popular portable application which can prove very handy in daily use. With the help of these Portable applications you can have your whole office and entertainment data in your USB Drives ready to get accessed on any computer.
Office Utilities :
AbiWord : AbiWord is a free word processing program similar to Microsoft® Word. It is suitable for a wide variety of word processing tasks.
Foxit PDF Reader : With over 50 million users all over the World, Foxit is the small and fast PDF viewer
OpenOffice : A multiplatform and multilingual office suite and an open-source project. It has all important office features like word processing, presentations, spreadsheets, databases etc.
Instant Messaging Clients :
Pidgin : Pidgin Portable is a multi-protocol instant messaging client that works with AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ, MSN Messenger, Yahoo! and more.
Trillian : Trillian is a multi-client application that allows you to connect to Yahoo, MSN, AIM, ICQ, and IRC in one program.
Miranda : Miranda IM is a multi protocol instant messenger client for Windows. Miranda IM uses very little memory and is extremely fast. It supports ICQ, AIM, MSN, Jabber, Yahoo, IRC and more.
Web Browsers :
Mozilla Firefox Portable Edition : Mozilla Firefox is a fast, full-featured web browser that’s easy to use. It has lots of great features including popup-blocking, tabbed-browsing, integrated search, improved privacy features, automatic updating and more.
Opera@USB : A powerful and portable web browser based on Opera.
Portable Chrome : Portable version of the popular Google Chrome Web Browser also known as Chromium.
Media Players :

Multi Virus Cleaner : This Program is Stand Alone Utility boasts a fast, user-friendly scanner that requires minimal processing power and is an excellent choice for repairing a compromised system.
Email Clients :
Mozilla Thunderbird : Mozilla Thunderbird is the safe, fast email client that’s easy to use. It has lots of great features including quick message search, customizable views, support for IMAP/POP, RSS support and more.
Koma-Mail : Koma-Mail does not need an installation, so that you can run Koma-Mail from your flash drive but, of course, also on your desktop.

I tend to favour SSuite Office’s free office suites. Their software also don’t need to run on Java or .NET, like so many open source office suites, so it makes their software very small and efficient.
